LLOYD HELMS

Lloyd is what could be termed a "late bloomer." About a year before joining Claddagh Ring, Lloyd suddenly and inexplicably started writing poetry. Not just sweet little verses, either. His style was more like epic historical poetry, reminiscent of Norse sagas. This rekindled his creativity, and he started a trek back to a part of his life he thought he had lost forever.

Back in the 1960's, Lloyd hung out and sang in coffee shops such as the Beanery in Wichita. He also played bagpipes, and was known to many people as "Scotty." He even tried out for the folk group The New Christy Minstrels and, to his surprise, was accepted! However, with a new family, he turned the offer down. Over the years, he often wondered "what might have been."

But Lloyd feels what is, his membership in Claddagh Ring, is even better. He brings a tradition with him that well complements and balances the styles brought by the younger members of the band. He writes music, such as the song "Summer Memories," evoking his family in his youth, bringing nods and tears in the audience. And his poetry has surfaced within the group, including "Join the Circle" which opens Claddagh Ring's CD, Circle of Friends. Spoken in Lloyd's deep baritone voice with (his) lone pennywhistle in the background, it magically sets the mood for the music to follow.

Lloyd is well-known for his stories and jokes...any lull in performance might send him off on a tangent and we sometimes can't get him back easily.

Lloyd's wife, Patricia, does the bookings for the group (and a very good job she does, too).  He lives in Wichita with Patricia and her son, John; they also are allowed to share their house with a cat, Theseus, and 1 miracle dog, a dwarf Irish setter (a long-hair dachshund to the rest of you) named Cuchulainn (Cush, for short).

Lloyd says he isn't sure where his trip with this group is taking him, but he knows he enjoys the ride.
